2001-07-18 - 9:21 p.m. Working alone in the shop this morning,Lenny Kravitz was blasting through the speakers, proclaiming "I'm gonna stand, stand by my woman now". That sort of got me thinking, I've heard that phrase so much, yet that noble declaration means little to me, if anything at all. Having nothing to do until lunch time, when the crowd starts pouring in, I had about two hours to give it some thought. Here is the result: 1. To lend support - to endorse; agree to; encourage; cheer on. Despite right, wrong, or reciprocity. 2. To be a partner - to walk along with; be a team with; to co-exist as a dyad. Despite wealth, health, and self. 3. To be the proud mother - to accompany graciously (whether feigned or not), as s/he prospers in the spotlight, Despite jealousy, resentment and self-inadequacy. 4. To be the strength - to give courage and the delusion/illusion of group power; to repair. Despite personal weakness and vulnerability. 5. To put on a smile and uphold the hegemonic view of a fulfilled, complete unit. For the individual has never been extolled as the smallest unit of our social world. Because human frailty is celebrated and we all need a better Other to right our wrongs.
